A top-rated urologist, Dr. Coburn is Professor and Chair of the Scott Department of Urology and holds the Russell and Mary Hugh Scott Chair in Urology at Baylor College of Medicine. 

His clinical interests include male infertility and reproductive disorders, urologic trauma, microsurgery, and general urology.

Among his other roles, he is the Urology Residency Program Director at Baylor, Vice-Chair of the Faculty Group Practice at Baylor, a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons, and serves on the Executive Committee of the ACS Committee on Trauma.

A graduate of Cornell University, Dr. Coburn obtained his medical degree with Honors from the New York University School of Medicine in 1982. He completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in 1988, and then pursued fellowship training also at Baylor as an American Foundation for Urologic Disease Scholar in 1990.

From 1990 until 2012, Dr. Coburn served as Chief of Urology at Ben Taub Hospital, focusing his clinical and research interests in the areas of urologic trauma, genital and urethral reconstructive surgery, and sexual and reproductive dysfunction. 

Highlighting his continuous commitment to staying at the forefront of urological advancements and providing exceptional care to his patients, Dr. Coburn is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology (ABU). The mission of the ABU is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, and working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.

Holding an extensive list of professional affiliations, Dr. Coburn is a valued member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the American Society of Andrology, the Society for Basic Urologic Research, the Harris County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction, the American Urological Association, the South Central Section of the American Urological Association, the Texas Urological Society, the Texas Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons, the Society of Urology Chairpersons and Program Directors, the International Society of Urology, and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Society of University Urologists and holds a fellowship with the American College of Surgeons, particularly in the Committee on Trauma.

Contributing to the field by being an abstract review team member for the Trauma and Reconstruction section of the American Urological Association, Dr. Coburn is also an active member of various educational and reconstructive surgical associations such as the Association for Surgical Education and the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons.

Impressively, he serves as a Surgical Specialty Governor on the Board of Governors for the American College of Surgeons and is part of the American Urological Association National Student Curriculum Task Force.

Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system.
