A seasoned anesthesiologist, Dr. Scott is the Division Chief of Critical Care Medicine and the Medical Director of Penn ELERT Tele-Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is also a Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care. In his professional experience, Dr. Scott has privileges to treat patients at Chester County Hospital, Penn Medicine Rittenhouse Long-Term Acute Care Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Pennsylvania Hospital.
As a leading expert in opioid-sparing anesthesia, he has been involved in efforts to reduce opioid use in surgery, including participating in webinars for the Office of the White House Office of National Drug Policy (ONDCP) and co-authoring key guidelines. He has also served on the editorial board for the U.K. and European Resuscitation Council’s Advanced Life Support for 15 years.
In addition to his work on opioid reduction, Dr. Scott has conducted research on the long-term effects of acute kidney injury and the use of goal-directed hemodynamic algorithms to reduce its occurrence. He is also interested in the use of telemedicine and artificial intelligence in critical care, specifically the use of machine learning with physiological waveforms.
Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. Anesthesiologists have a vast amount of responsibilities that include vigilant monitoring of the patient’s vital signs during surgery, managing acute pain, maintaining safety, and most importantly, acting as the patient’s advocate in the operating room.
