Get to know Hip and Knee Replacement Specialist Dr. Michael P. Ast, who serves the population of New Jersey.

Dr. Ast completed his undergraduate degree from Temple University with a Bachelors of Arts in Biology in 2003. He then graduated with his Medical Degree from the Temple University School of Medicine in 2007 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, giving him over a decades worth of experience in his field. After medical school, Dr. Ast completed his orthopaedic surgery residency with North Shore LIJ Health System, where he was named chief resident. Wanting to further his training he undertook his adult reconstruction and joint replacement surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Dr. Ast is Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. To stay up to date in his field he remains a distinguished member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and on the Board of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Ast is noted for his expertise in primary, complex and revision joint replacement as well as outpatient partial and total joint replacement. He currently practices with Hospital for Special Surgery.

He previously developed and directed one of the largest and most successful outpatient joint replacement programs in the northeast. He also has both clinical and teaching expertise in the use of robotics and computer assistance in joint replacement surgery, and was the director of robotic and computer assisted surgery at a major university institution in New Jersey.Dr. Ast has extensive experience with and has published research on patient-specific instruments and implants. During his studies, he published numerous articles and chapters in peer-reviewed journals and internationally distributed textbooks, including several chapters on “Approaches for hip replacement surgery.” He has also presented clinical and basic science research both nationally and internationally.

Orthopaedic surgeons are devoted to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles. Some orthopaedists are generalists, while others specialize in certain areas of the body, others specialty focuses include shoulder and elbow, hand, and spine. Orthopaedic surgeons treat broken bones, and replace painful joints, and also treat patients for sports injuries, back pain, ruptured discs and spinal stenosis, bone tumors, carpal tunnel, hand arthritis and hand injuries, club foot, bow legs and hip dysplasia, orthopaedic trauma, limb lengthening, achilles tendon injuries, bunions and foot and ankle injuries, osteoporosis, and arthritis.

Dr. Ast was a Division I gymnast at Temple University and captain of the conference champions and top ten nationally ranked team in 2003. He is married with two children, and enjoys his time playing tennis, golf, fishing, skiing and traveling.
