Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Thomas, who serves patients in Florida.

Dr. Thomas is a researcher and neurosurgeon specializing in diseases and conditions that affect the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves. He works at ACME Spine & Orthopedics, with offices in Altamonte Springs, Coral Springs, and Miami, Florida.

With a specialty in minimally invasive spine surgery, skull base and endoscopic brain surgery, Dr. Thomas has been referred to as a patient-focused professional and a conscientious and skilled neurosurgeon by his colleagues. His goal is to improve the outcomes and lives of his patients who have experienced spinal or cranial injuries and who have suffered as a result of those injuries.

Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from William Jewell College in 1987. He then went on to graduate with his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1991.

Furthering his training, he performed his internship at Tulsa Regional Medical Center, and did his post-graduate neurological training at a number of locations including Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Schneider’s Children’s Hospital, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, North Shore University Hospital, and New York University. 

In 2001, Dr. Thomas obtained board certification in neurological surgery through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery (AOBS). The AOBS is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the use of surgery to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Before coming to Florida where he completed a neurological spine fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in March of 2015, Dr. Thomas practiced general neurosurgery in Washington state for 17 years. While in Yakima, Washington, he worked as the Chief Neurosurgeon at the Central Washington Neuroscience Center and had a private practice. 

Throughout his career, he has performed a variety of procedures and has created a number of videos to teach medical students at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences. He is currently licensed in both Washington and Florida, and is affiliated with Surgery Center of Winter Park.

Having helped many patients find back pain relief through minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Thomas is a member of the Back Pain Centers of America network. 

Furthermore, he is an active member of the Congress of Neurosurgical Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, and the Florida Medical Association.

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, cervical and lumbar disc disease, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Thomas enjoys mountaineering, playing golf, snow skiing, and fly fishing. His favorite publications are the Journal of Neurosurgery, the Spine Journal, and the Journal of Neurological Surgery.
