Growing up in Dallas, Dr. Shen graduated from the University of Pennsylvania before returning to her home state for medical school and general surgery residency at the University of Texas in San Antonio and Houston, respectively. She approached the end of her general surgery training still undecided on a specialty. Then, she recalled how much she enjoyed the patients she met while staffing a breast clinic during residency. She completed a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at UT’s MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she remained on the faculty for three years before moving to Lancaster.
Breast surgery is a form of surgery performed on the breast. A breast surgeon is usually a general surgeon who is especially skilled in operating on the breast. They may biopsy a tumor in the breast and, if it is malignant, remove the tumor. They may also do breast reconstruction following a mastectomy for breast cancer. The surgeons who carry out this type of breast reconstruction may be breast oncology surgeons or plastic surgeons. (Surgeons trained in both these specialities are known as oncoplastic surgeons.) Some breast surgeons also do cosmetic breast surgery.
