As an internationally-renowned, board-certified and fellowship-trained ophthalmologist, Dr. Materin specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with ocular tumors, including benign and malignant tumors of the eye. He joined Duke Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina as a Professor of Ophthalmology & Director of Ophthalmic Oncology in September of 2016.

He joined Duke from Yale University School of Medicine, where he was an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology & Visual Science. Prior to his appointment at Yale, he was at Wills Eye Hospital at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where he served as Director of Diagnostic Studies for the Ocular Oncology Service.
Born and raised in Argentina, Dr. Materin earned his medical degree back in 1983 from the University of Buenos Aires. He then went on to complete his residency in ophthalmology at Santa Lucia National Hospital in 1989, followed by his fellowship in ocular oncology at Wills Eye Hospital in Pennsylvania in 2000.
With over two decades of experience in his field, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, which is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America. He is also an active member of the International Society of Ocular Oncology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, and the Argentine Society of Ophthalmology.
In addition to serving on the Education Committee of the American Association of Ocular Oncology and Pathology, Dr. Materin is the President Elect for the Pan American Society of Ocular Oncology.
Among his various achievements, he has published extensively in peer-reviewed literature, including journals and book chapters. He has been invited as a visiting professor in the US, Canada, Israel, Spain, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Argentina. He has also received the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a Member of Merit of Clinica Barraquer (Barcelona, Spain).
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
Recognized for his skill and compassion, Dr. Materin has special interests in ocular melanoma, retinoblastoma, choroidal hemangiomas, retinal hemangioblastomas, metastases, astrocytic tumors, and tumors related to other conditions or syndromes like Von Hippel-Lindau disease and tuberous sclerosis, among others.
