Passionate for Advancing the Field of Anesthesiology through Research and Education

A highly respected and accomplished professional in the field of anesthesiology, Dr. Xiong serves as a Clinical Associate Professor at the prestigious Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. 

Having completed his medical education at the University of Shanghai Second Medical University and Ph.D program at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), he went on to complete his clinical Anesthesiology residency training at the University Hospital of New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) before joining the NJMS, Rutgers faculty practice in 2002.

Board-certified as an anesthesiologist, Dr. Xiong has made significant contributions to the field and has been promoted to the position of associate professor in recognition of his expertise (2012). With a diverse clinical background that includes training in ophthalmology, pediatrics, in addition to anesthesiology, his current practice interests lie in neuro-anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and obstetric anesthesia. Dr. Xiong has been awarded as Fellow of American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA) in 2020. 

Moreover, he is a prolific researcher with a keen interest in laboratory studies. He has presented over 80 abstracts at major Anesthesia and Neuroscience meetings and has more than 45 publications in the Anesthesiology Journal. His groundbreaking research on topics such as brain glycine receptor from isoflurane, interaction between general anesthesia and sleeping pathways, neurotoxicity from prenatal propofol exposure, Molecular and behavioral Evidence of Propofol Addiction has garnered significant recognition and multiple honors from Anesthesiology Societies at the state, national, and international levels. He received “Best Resident’s Mentor”, “the best research abstract” several times in meetings of International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS). 

An authority in his field, Dr. Xiong’s commitment to teaching has been acknowledged with prestigious awards such as the ‘Golden Apple Teacher’ in 2007 and 2008 for two consecutive years. He plays a vital role in preparing and guiding anesthesia residents for their oral board exams, ensuring that they receive comprehensive and high-quality training. He is also an author for several books in the field of Anesthesia oral board preparation.

In addition to excellency in clinic practice, in resident’s education,  and in laboratory experiments, Dr. Xiong actively participated in many committee work in University Hospital and Rutgers Medical School. In the past, He served as An Representative Of University Physician Association (UPA), Drug safety committee, etc. Currently, he is a committee member of Rutgers Faculty Affair, and Advisory member of “Career in Medicine” (CIM).
