Mohammad Akmal, MD, an esteemed nephrologist, has made significant contributions to the field of kidney health through his private practice in Los Angeles, California. With a specialization in dialysis, hypertension, kidney disease, and renal transplantation, Dr. Akmal has dedicated his career to improving patient outcomes and advancing nephrology.

Born in Pakistan, Dr. Akmal graduated from Khyber Medical College in 1967 before relocating to the United States. He completed two prestigious fellowships in nephrology at the Christ Hospital and the LAC+USC Medical Center in 1976 and 1980, respectively. His passion for teaching and mentorship led him to a distinguished career at LA County-USC Medical Center, where he retired in 2012 as a Professor of Medicine. Dr. Akmal also served as the Medical Director of USC/Keck School of Medicine affiliated Dialysis Programs for 25 years, shaping the future of nephrology education and practice in Southern California.

Currently, Dr. Akmal holds the titles of Professor Emeritus and Medical Director Emeritus at USC Keck School of Medicine, where he continues to inspire the next generation of medical professionals. His commitment to nephrology extends to his active membership in several professional organizations, including the American Society of Nephrology, the American Heart Association, the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America, the International Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California, and the Society for Advancement of Science.

Dr. Akmal’s exemplary work has not gone unnoticed; he has received numerous accolades, including the Leadership Award – National Kidney Foundation of Southern California (1999), Spirit of Nephrology Award – National Kidney Foundation of Southern California (2000), Outstanding Teacher Award – Keck School of Medicine at USC (2000), Medical Students Appreciation Certificate – Keck School of Medicine at USC (2000-2006), APPNA Award – Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descendants of North America (2007), and Dr. Pepper Award – DaVita Dialysis Inc. (2008). He has also held influential leadership roles, serving as President of the Medical Advisory Board for the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California (NKFSC) from 1994 to 1996, Chairman of the Board of Directors for NKFSC from 1997 to 1999, and President of the Board of Directors for both NKFSC and the Southern California Renal Disease Council Inc. (ESRD Network #18) from 2000 to 2002.

In addition to his clinical and academic achievements, Dr. Akmal is a prolific author, having penned 65 scientific papers and two books, further showcasing his expertise in the field. 

Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. Akmal enjoys exploring new places, playing volleyball, reading, traveling, and reflecting his belief in a well-rounded life.
