Prior to joining South Texas Dermatopathology, Dr. Lilo operated in a number of laboratory and teaching positions. He was an Assistant Professor of General Pathology at the University of Baghdad, where he was responsible for teaching third and fourth year medical students. He was also the Director of the Iraqi Red-Crescent Laboratories in Baghdad, and led laboratory workshops. Dr. Lilo also worked as a pathologist in a teaching hospital in Amman Jordan and held many conferences for interns and residents at Johns Hopkins Hospital, teaching alongside attending physicians.
Academically, Dr. Lilo received his medical degree from the University of Baghdad College of Medicine in Iraq, where he also served a two-year medical internship followed by a residency and fellowship in surgical pathology. During this time, he was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Academic Accomplishment. He then relocated to the United States for his postgraduate training, starting with a four-year anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution in Baltimore, Maryland. Here, he subsequently completed a fellowship in cytopathology and was awarded the Eggleston Pathology Award and the American Society of Cytopathology travel scholarship. He then went on to complete a fellowship in dermatopathology at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in dermatopathology, cytopathology & anatomic and clinical pathology through the American Board of Pathology (ABPath). The mission of the ABPath is to promote the health of the public and advance the practice and science of pathology by establishing voluntary certification standards and assessing the qualifications of those seeking to practice the specialty of pathology.
A Fellow of the American Society for Clinical Pathology and a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists, Dr. Lilo is a member of five other professional medical organizations.
Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and in some cases, the whole body. Pathologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and management of diseases by laboratory methods.
