Dr. Karanjia graduated from Stanford University, School of Medicine with her Medical Degree, where she also completed her internal medicine internship. She then completed her Neurology residency with the UCLA Medical Center. Wanting to further her training she then completed her Neurocritical Care Fellowship with the Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Karanjia is dual certified in Neurocritical Care and Neurology with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is also certified in neurocritical care from the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. To stay up to date in her field, she remains a professional member of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Neurocritical Care Society, and the American Academy of Neurology.

She is medical director of UC San Diego Health’s Neurocritical Care Program and Neuro-Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which she also founded. The Neuro-ICU team provides around-the-clock expert care, seven days a week, to critically ill patients who may have severe brain injury, stroke or brain tumors, or may be recovering from a neurosurgical procedure.

Dr. Karanjia is an associate professor in the Departments of Neurosciences and Anesthesiology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her research interests include early detection of neurologic deterioration and evaluating methods for monitoring cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure. She has published several book chapters and articles in leading journals, including Neurocritical Care and Archives of Neurology.

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous systems (and their subdivisions, the autonomic and somatic nervous systems), including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle. Neurological practice relies heavily on the field of neuroscience, which is the scientific study of the nervous system. Neurologists may also be involved in clinical research, clinical trials, and basic or translational research.
