Dr. Abate is Professor of Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine, at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston.

Dr. Abate received his medical degree in 1985 from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia – School of Medicine. He then went on to complete an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the same University. Upon relocating to the United States, Dr. Abate completed his fellowship training in Endocrinology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, followed by his residency in Internal Medicine at the same medical center.

Dr. Abate is board-certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), in Lipidology by the American Board of Clinical Lipidology (ABCL), and Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity (ABOM). He is also a Certified Diabetes Educator. He holds professional memberships with the Obesity Society, the American Diabetes Association, and the American College of Physicians. He is Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the National Lipid Association.

As director of the Endocrinology Division, Dr. Abate has developed a clinical and research program with a special focus on obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Ultimately, the goal of the program is to develop and implement effective strategies to prevent type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. His program has recently gained recognition by the Center for Disease Control to prevent type 2 diabetes (Prevent T2).  

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists, like Dr. Abate, have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorders – among others.

During his 25 + years of academic work, Dr. Abate has published over 100 research articles and book chapters in the field of lipids, diabetes, obesity and the metabolic syndrome. He attributes his success to great mentors and his passion for science and medicine.
