Nivia M. Acevedo Feliciano, RN, a Registered Nurse with Crownpoint Health Care Facility

Get to know Registered Nurse, Nivia M. Acevedo Feliciano, who serves patients in Crownpoint, New Mexico.

Nivia is a registered nurse who is currently serving patients at Crownpoint Health Care Facility in Crownpoint, New Mexico. The Crownpoint Health Care Facility serves a population of 20,000 Navajo people. The staff consists of primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurses at a 32-bed hospital.

Having always known that she wanted to be involved in healthcare, Nivia started out as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. This experience opened her eyes to the field of nursing. Now, with years of experience, she attributes her success to her respect for her patients and co-workers, her ability to follow regulations in order to provide the best quality care possible, her passion for her field, as well as her caring nature.

After many years of working as a nurse, including a staff nurse, nurse supervisor, and nursing director, in her hometown of Puerto Rico, everything in Nivia’s professional and personal life changed. The primary care clinic where she was working as a Nurse Director was closed and she became unemployed. After many interviews, nobody would hire her because she was “overqualified” due to her level of education.

Feeling frustrated, sad, and hopeless, she knew a lot of nurses, doctors, and health providers were moving to the United States for better job opportunities. Putting her faith in God’s hands, her next action was to work as a travel nurse and face her own fears of being far away from home and working with a language barrier. After 2 years working with the Indian community and the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, she is very proud of herself and the sacrifices that she has made. Her life experiences have taught her that you never know how much you can do until you try. She thanks God for all of her blessings.

In regards to her educational background, Nivia earned her high school diploma from Germán Rieckehoff High School in Puerto Rico in 1983. She then went on to earn her Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao Campus in 1985. This was followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the same educational venue in 1997 and a Master of Science in Occupational Nursing at the University of the Sacred Heart, San Juan Campus in 2009.

In addition to being a member of the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing, she holds a certification in Basic Life Support. Her favorite medical publication is the American Journal of Nursing.

Born in Vieques, Puerto Rico, Nivia’s favorite place to vacation is her home country. In her spare time, she enjoys dancing, traveling, volunteering, and singing in church. Her favorite movies are Top Gun, Man of Honor, and Ghost. Moreover, her favorite music includes love songs, salsa, and merengue.
