Dr. Kneteman is the Professor and Division Director of Transplantation Surgery at the University of Alberta, Zone Clinical Section Chief of Transplantation at Alberta Health Services, as well as President of KMT Hepatech, a Division of PXB Corporation. KMT Hepatech provides clinically validated support to developers of novel therapeutics and vaccines for HCV, HBV, malaria and other liver-centric diseases through its proprietary mouse with a humanized liver – the PXB mouse (uPA/SCID).

Dr. Kneteman is also a practicing HPB & transplant surgeon at the University of Alberta Hospital. HPB stands for Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Surgery – meaning surgery of the liver, pancreas and biliary system. HPB surgeons help to diagnose and treat patients with conditions such as liver cancer (primary or secondary), pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis, bile duct cancer and gallstones.

Dr. Kneteman earned his medical degree from the University of Alberta, then trained in transplantation at the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri. He came back to the University of Alberta to establish a Liver Transplant Program, which has become a premier transplant program in the country, including performing all of Western Canada’s pediatric liver transplants. He also established the U of A’s hepatobiliary surgery program and has trained many surgeons currently performing liver transplants and complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery for cancer in Canada and abroad.

Dr. Kneteman is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC), and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Furthermore, he is a member of the Canadian Network on Hepatitis C (CanHepC), a collaborative research network funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The network is dedicated to translational research, linking over 100 researchers, trainees, knowledge-users (community members, community-based organizations, policy and decision makers) in the field of Hepatitis C (HCV) from across Canada as well as international partners.

Dr. Kneteman has devoted his life and his career to liver and organ transplantation. He has been honoured for his work many times by organizations such as the Canadian Liver Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association (Outstanding Achievement Award), the Alberta Medical Association (Meritorious Service Award) and the Canadian Society of Transplantation (Lifetime Achievement Award). He has also received many awards for his clinical and research expertise, including the Alberta Centennial Award, the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada.

Dr. Kneteman’s research interests include the role of liver transplantation in the treatment of HCC, evaluations of chimeric mouse models for toxicity and metabolic issues; and biology of animal models for therapeutics of HCV, HBV, and malaria.He has also long been a passionate and effective advocate for organ donation, giving talks and interviews and making media appearances to raise public awareness on the need for donation and the lifesaving benefits of transplantation.
