Dr. Akilov is a board-certified dermatologist. He serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh and as the Director of the Cutaneous Lymphoma Program and Extracorporeal Photopheresis Unit, providing the full spectrum of management for all stages of cutaneous lymphoma.
Before joining the Department of Dermatology, he completed his postdoctoral fellowship in Parasite Immunology at the University of Notre Dame, and in Photomedicine at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He served as a Research Instructor at Harvard Medical School before going on to complete a two-year fellowship in Cutaneous Oncology in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh. Upon completion of his internship in general surgery at the University of Colorado, he returned to the Department of Dermatology for residency training and was appointed Assistant Professor in 2015.
In addition to serving as a principal investigator on multiple clinical trials in cutaneous lymphoma, Dr. Akilov is very enthusiastic about educating residents and mentoring future dermatologists. He earned his medical degree from Ural State Medical Academy in Yekaterinburg, Russia and his Doctorate degree from the Russian State Medical University in Moscow.
Recognized for his clinical expertise, he was awarded the Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation Young Investigator Award, the Women’s Dermatologic Society Mentorship Award, and the United States Cutaneous Lymphoma Consortium Mentorship Award, among others.
The doctor is a member of the Society for Investigative Dermatology, the American Academy of Dermatology, and the United States Cutaneous Lymphoma Consortium. He is also board-certified in dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology, which is one of the 24 medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties.
