A trusted cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. McConnell is the Surgical Director of the Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Cardiopulmonary Support Programs at The Heart Center, Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He is also an Assistant Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

A thought leader in the areas of aortic valve repair, right ventricular to pulmonary artery reconstruction and treating mitral valve disease in infants and small children.  He is an early adopter and pioneer in the Midwestern United States for the use of non-operative therapies for chest wall deformities, with patients referred from across the US, North America and South America.

Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. McConnell received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Utah. He completed fellowships at New York Medical College, Oregon Health & Science University, The Ohio State University Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

With an unwavering commitment to his specialty, the doctor is board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, and congenital cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Moreover, he is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Along with colleagues in pulmonary medicine and otolaryngology, Dr. McConnell has developed a Thoracic Airway collaborative that now treats patients for complex disorders of the airway within the chest. His primary translational research is focused on the use of mechanical assist devices and associated therapies targeting heart recovery.
