Geriatric care management is defined as the process of planning and coordinating the care of the elderly and others with physical and/or mental impairments to meet their long term care needs, improve their quality of life, and maintain their independence for as long as possible. Long-term care, on the other hand, refers to a variety of services which help meet both the medical and non-medical needs of people with a chronic illness or disability who cannot care for themselves for long periods. In addition to her specializations, Peggy’s research interests include Parkinson’s disease and forms of dementia.
Peggy’s mother encouraged her to go into the field of nursing. When she was just 15 years old, Peggy worked as a nursing assistant in a nursing home. She later received her certified nurse assistant certificate at 19 years old. Peggy volunteered at Hendrix Health Care Center in Double Springs, AL through her teenage years. While doing so, she was awarded the ‘Teen Volunteer of the Year’ by the Alabama Nursing Home Association in 1991. She also has experience working as a hospice nurse, as a group home manager for 4 women with intellectual disabilities, and as a volunteer with the Red Cross.
When asked why she chose a career in nursing, Peggy stated that she had been raised around nursing homes since she was a child. She considers working with the elderly to be her calling. At the start of each day, she knows that she is needed and that she can make a difference. For this reason, she treats each patient like family, giving them the care that she would want her loved ones to have.
As for her educational experience, Peggy graduated from Addison High School with her high school diploma in 1991. She then went on to earn her nursing degree from Bevill State Community College in Hamilton, Alabama in 2003. Peggy is currently enrolled at Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle, Maine in Career Studies in preparation to enroll in the RN program next year.
Peggy currently serves as a service officer of the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA). The ALA is the largest organization in the world dedicated to veteran service for women.
Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) provide routine care for the sick or injured. They work in conjunction with registered nurses (RNs) to adhere to a care plan for each patient. However, while most RNs work in hospitals, LPNs are generally hired in smaller settings, such as nursing homes, home health environments, and rehabilitation centers.
Born in Haleyville, Alabama, Peggy enjoys crocheting, cross-stitching, and watching true crime documentaries in her spare time. Her favorite movies are Where the Heart Is, Prey for Rock & Roll, and Trainwreck. Her favorite type of music is heavy metal, pop, and ‘80s & ‘90s rock. What’s more, her favorite place to vacation in Cancun, Mexico. As a wife and mother, Peggy has a wonderful life and according to her, it doesn’t take much to make her happy.
