Peter W. Henderson, MD, MBA, FACS, a Plastic Surgeon with Mount Sinai Downtown

Dr. Peter Henderson is a double board-certified microsurgeon and reconstructive plastic surgeon who specializes in breast reconstruction.

He and his team work hard to help women emerge from breast cancer treatment healthy, confident, and feeling whole. This is achieved through a combination of world-class results, compassionate care, and seamless processes. Each patient’s customized reconstructive plan can draw from all forms of breast reconstruction, and this often includes the sophisticated, nuanced microsurgical techniques that allow tissue to be transferred from one part of the body (often the lower abdominal wall) to the chest to create a shape and feel that closely matches the breast tissue prior to cancer treatment.

In addition to clinical care, Dr. Henderson is an active researcher and author. As the director of the H2 Research Society, their team strives to advance the understanding of, and success in, microsurgery and breast reconstruction.  As a result, he has written over 70 peer-reviewed publications and 11 book chapters, and has been invited to give lectures across the country and across the world. He is the recipient of various awards, including the 2019 James Barrett Brown Award, the Webster Award, the Dicran Goulian Prize for Academic Excellence in Plastic Surgery, and H.L. Bush Award for Excellence in Vascular Biology.

He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and his team is based on Union Square in Manhattan. He is on staff at Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West, Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Mount Sinai Queens, Mount Sinai Brooklyn, and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai.

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Henderson received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University, his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, and his Master of Business Administration degree from the Stern School of Business at New York University.  He completed two residencies at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center (general surgery, followed by plastic surgery). He then completed a fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories – reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon’s primary responsibility is performing surgical and non-surgical procedures, and they use a variety of reparative and reconstructive techniques to get the job done.
