Get to know Addictionologist Dr. Philip Gilly, who serves patients in Westland and Canton, Michigan.

A top addictionologist, Dr. Gilly offers compassionate, non-judgmental treatment of drug/alcohol dependence and associated mental health issues. 

Since November of 2020, he has been working at Hegira Health, Inc. in Westland, Michigan, offering outpatient treatment for substance use disorders. He is also the Medical Director of Oakdale Recovery Center, offering inpatient treatment.

Originally training in and practicing family medicine for 20 years, Dr. Gilly noticed that an increasing number of his patients needed help with substance abuse. For this reason, he developed expertise in addiction medicine which, since 2007, has become his full-time practice. 

With a broad educational background, Dr. Gilly graduated with his high school diploma from Robert E. Peary High School in 1974. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry from The Johns Hopkins University in 1978, after which he obtained his medical degree from the New York University Grossman School of Medicine in 1982.

From 1982 until 1985, Dr. Gilly performed his internship and residency in family medicine at the University of Texas Southwest Medical School and St. Paul Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

That same year, he attained board certification in family medicine through the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.

Furthermore, he is board-certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM). The ABPM was established to promote the health and safety of the American people through high standards in the certification and maintenance of certification in the profession of preventive health.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASAM), Dr. Gilly is also an active member of the Michigan Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians.

Having developed teaching programs for residents and medical students, Dr. Gilly has served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Among his prior appointments as an attending physician include affiliations with Henry Ford Maplegrove, Kingswood Hospital, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, Albany Memorial Hospital, and Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Throughout his line of work, Dr. Gilly was responsible for developing the treatment protocols for both the inpatient and outpatient services. He was also responsible for developing and presenting an annual lecture series introducing addiction medicine to the psychiatry residents in a series of twelve lectures at Henry Ford Hospital.

Addiction medicine is a medical subspecialty that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, evaluation, treatment, and recovery of persons with addiction, of those with substance-related and addictive disorders, and of people who show unhealthy use of substances including alcohol, nicotine, prescription medicine, and other illicit and licit drugs. Addiction medicine physicians provide comprehensive care to improve the health outcomes for patients with a wide range of addiction disorders, including drug and alcohol addiction, and pharmaceutical dependency.

Fellow physicians have twice chosen Dr. Gilly as one of the ten Top Docs in Addiction Medicine in the Detroit/Southeast Michigan area in 2017 and 2019. 

Passionate about teaching the medical model of substance use disorders and the bio-psycho-social approach to treatment to both patients and colleagues, some of his publications include Gilly, P.A.
