Leading the Future of Medical Education through Innovative Simulation Techniques

A determined emergency physician, Dr. Ahmed is a Professor of Emergency Medicine, Simulation Division Chief, and Director of Simulation in the Interprofessional Practice and Education Center at the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, his journey in medicine began at John Carroll University, followed by his medical training at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. His commitment to service was evident during his time as a combat medic in the U.S. Army Reserves. After completing his residency in emergency medicine at Summa Akron City Hospital, Dr. Ahmed pursued further specialization through a medical simulation fellowship at Harvard Medical School and earned a Master’s in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), the doctor is board-certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He has published numerous research studies, further solidifying his reputation as a leader in medical simulation.

Returning to Summa Akron City Hospital, Dr. Ahmed established the first medical simulation fellowship in Ohio, where he developed a nationally recognized simulation program over nine years. His innovative contributions include graduating ten simulation fellows, consulting for NASA on simulation projects, and co-developing a novel transvenous pacemaker simulator.

Recognized for his excellence in teaching, he has received numerous accolades, including the Donald O’Hara Teaching Award at Harvard Medical School in 2009, the Emergency Medicine Residency Faculty of the Year in 2010 and 2012, the 2017 ACEP National Faculty Teaching Award, and the SAEM Simulation Academy “Distinguished Educator” award in 2020. His passion lies in training emergency medicine residents to become effective team leaders, a vital skill in today’s healthcare environment.

On a more personal note, Dr. Ahmed shares his life with his wife, a pediatric palliative care physician at Riley Children’s Hospital, and their two boys. Outside of his professional commitments, he enjoys spending quality time with his family, cheering for Cleveland sports teams, and practicing martial arts.
