Get to know Vascular Surgeon Dr. Reagan W. Quan, who serves patients in Leesburg, Virginia.

A board-certified vascular and endovascular surgeon with over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Quan serves as the Medical Director of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute at Inova Loudoun Hospital. He specializes in the treatment and management of complex hybrid aortic reconstruction (using both open and patient-specific customized fenestrated and branched endovascular graft technology), carotid artery surgery and stenting, athletic-related vascular injuries (such as thoracic outlet syndrome and popliteal artery entrapment syndrome), repair of traumatic vascular injuries, dialysis access, blood clot removal, and the treatment of varicose veins.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Quan graduated with his medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1998. After completing his internship at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in 1999, he went on to complete two military assignments as a Flight Surgeon in Korea and Washington, DC in 2000 and 2001, respectively.

Wanting to further his training, he completed his residency in general surgery at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in 2005. Finally, he completed his fellowship in endovascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in 2006, before returning to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to complete his fellowship in vascular surgery in 2007.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in vascular surgery and general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

In order to remain up to date in his field, Dr. Quan is an active member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society, and the Association of United States Army Flight Surgeons (Life Member). He is also a past member of the Western Vascular Society, the Eastern Vascular Society, the Pacific Northwest Vascular Surgery Society, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Society for Military Vascular Surgery, the Boston University School of Medicine Alumni Association, the Society of Vascular Ultrasound, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the Armed Forces Medical Society of Boston University, and the American Medical Students Association.

While serving as a U.S. Army Surgeon, he developed an expertise in trauma and vascular surgery. He performed life-saving surgeries on service members injured during combat operations. He continues to serve as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland and trains U.S Army vascular surgery fellows.

In the past, Dr. Quan had admitting privileges at Franciscan Health System, The Vancouver Clinic, St Vincent’s Healthcare, Harrison Medical Center, The University Hospital and Harry S. Truman VA Hospital, and Whidbey General Hospital. He also held various committee positions, including the Society for Vascular Surgery, Government Relations Committee, the Society for Vascular Surgery, Ad Hoc Committee, the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society (Chair), the Society for Vascular Surgery, Student and Resident Outreach Committee, the Radiation Laboratory Utilization Committee, Dept. of Surgery Representative, and the Hybrid Operating Room Planning Committee.

Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which diseases of the vascular system, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic circulation, are managed by medical therapy, minimally invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. A vascular surgeon diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions in the arteries and veins, also called the blood vessels. These specialists treat a range of health problems, from spider and varicose veins to life-threatening aneurysms, and can help patients manage chronic conditions throughout their lives.

Honorably discharged from the United States Army in 2013, Dr. Quan has been the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal (2013), Combat Action Badge (2008), Bronze Star Medal for Service (2008), American Venous Forum / 2nd Annual Servier Traveling Fellowship Award (2007), Juan C. d’Avis, MD Outstanding Surgical Fellow/Resident Award (2007), Jack L. Cronenwett, MD Award (2007), 3rd Place Award (2006), American College of Surgeons’ 83rd Annual Clinical Congress Award (1997), Committee on Surgical Education in Medical Schools Award (1997), and US Army Health Professionals Scholarship (1994).

A native of San Diego, California, he currently lives in Leesburg with his wife and two sons. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling with his family, flying fixed and rotary wing aircraft, power boating, scuba diving, refining his field/sea-to-table cooking, crab and saltwater fishing, mountain biking, swimming, and teaching wilderness first aid and survival training to kids and teenagers. He is fluent in both English and Cantonese Chinese.
