Prior to that, she was the Founder, President, and Medical Director of a mental health day treatment facility for women called Mountain Oak Comprehensive Care, PC in Santa Cruz County.
Throughout her academic career, she received her bachelor’s degree in Technology from the Oregon Institute of Technology in 1977. While working full-time as a medical technologist, she completed a Master of Public Health degree with an emphasis on Prevention in 1983. She then went on to earn her medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1990, after which she fulfilled her residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center. She also completed her fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Stanford University Medical Center. While there, she was named Chief Fellow and was able to rise to become the Medical Director of Adolescent Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program.
Since completing her fellowship, Dr. Powers has served as an attending psychiatrist for the Eating Disorder Clinic for Adolescents and for the Comprehensive Pediatric Care Unit at Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. She has also served as a child and adolescent psychiatrist at a Seneca Center, a Day Treatment Program in Fremont, and in community psychiatry for seven years.
The doctor is double board-certified in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.
For a period of three years, Dr. Powers was the President of the Santa Clara County Society of Psychiatric Physicians. She was also asked to be a Delegate for the Santa Clara County Medical Association to the California Medical Association.
To this day, she continues to be an active member of all major psychiatric associations, both nationally and locally. She is currently the Chair for the Well Being Committee for Physicians in Santa Clara County, and also on the same committee at Stanford. What’s more, she is a member of an elite national group of psychiatrists called the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, which is a committee that was able to write the first and only Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health.
Throughout her extensive career, Dr. Powers has been honored with several awards and recognitions, including the Presidential Scholar Award from The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 1995, the Janssen Clinical Scholar Award from the US Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress in 1994, as well as the Patton State Hospital Award “In Recognition of Outstanding Service to Patients and Staff” for volunteer services there in 1993.
