She has been involved with the RN Residency Emergency Program for the past several years. This is where she introduces emergency protocols of the hospital to the new RNs.  In conjunction with her career at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Karen is a part of the primary unit that cares for orthopedic patients–especially spinal fusion and neurosurgical patients.

Karen began her career at Texas Children’s Hospital on the Medical Surgical Unit. She  continued to provide care and nursing expertise at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. In order to stay up-to-date on all medical advancements in her field, she maintains a professional membership with the American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association and the National Association Orthopaedic Nurses.

The main role of a registered nurse is to assist physicians in providing treatment to patients suffering from various medical conditions. While their primary responsibilities will involve caring for patients, their specific job duties will vary depending on the employer and specialization. While a majority of registered nurses work in hospitals, they are not limited to that setting. They can also work in clinics, schools, assisted living facilities, homes, schools and more. They must  stay up-to-date with new tools and technologies to help provide the best care to their patients, families, and be supportive to doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Registered nurses must have a certain set of skills, including excellent communication, emotional intelligence, collaboration, problem-solving, critical-thinking skills, and more.

For the past two years, Karen has provided a lot of support with the Annual Cereal Drive at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Due to her extensive support, starting in 2019, she will take on the responsibility of co-chair with Jacquelyn Gayer, to help divide the responsibilities of the Cereal Drive. She undertakes other philanthropic initiatives to give back to her community. Due to her outstanding achievements, she has earned several recognitions for her dedication to the field, including a Daisy Award in 2012 and a Certificate of Excellence in 2011. When she is not assisting patients, Karen enjoys cooking and baking.
