Get to know Registered Nurse Karla Richmond, who serves patients within Azusa Pacific University.
Karla earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing at California State University, then continued her studies with a PhD and Master’s in nursing from Azusa Pacific University and the University of San Diego respectively. She received her registered nursing degree from Riverside City College.
Currently, Karla serves as a nurse educator, Professor Emeritus, within Azusa Pacific University, training the next generation of nurses. Within her nursing scope, she focuses on obstetric nursing and specializes in women’s health. Karla holds certifications in Electronic Fetal Monitoring and Inpatient Obstetrics. Additionally, Karla volunteers with many local organizations. She is a church volunteer for mothers of preschoolers and an emergency shelter volunteer for children ages 11-14.
To stay up-to-date on developments in her field, Karla maintains professional memberships in the Association of Women’s Health–Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, and Sigma Theta Tau–the nursing honor society. She is able to serve a wide variety of patients and give them modern, technologically sound treatments.
The main role of a registered nurse is to assist physicians in providing treatment to patients suffering from various medical conditions. While their primary responsibilities will involve caring for patients, their specific job duties will vary depending on your employer and specialization. While a majority of registered nurses work at hospitals they are not limited to that setting, they can also work in in clinics, schools, assisted living facilities, homes, schools and more. They must also stay up-to-date with new tools and technology to help provide the best care to patients and families, and the best support to doctors and other healthcare professionals. Registered nurses must possess excellent communication, emotional intelligence, teamwork, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
Karla attributes her successful career to her love of nursing, and obstetrics and her ability to stay up to date on developments in the field. When she is not assisting patients or volunteering, she enjoys reading and spending time with her family.
