Get to know Registered Nurse Rafael Paule.
Rafael Paule hails from Lubao, Pampanga, Philippines. He graduated from St. Anne’s Hospital School of nursing in 1978. After passing the Philippines Licensure exam for the Board of Nursing, he was hired to work abroad in Bahrain, Arabian Gulf under the Ministry of Health as a Staff Nurse for their Psychiatric Hospital from 1979-1989. In 1990, he immigrated to Canada with his wife, also an RN, and their young family. He wrote and passed the Canadian Licensure Nursing exams, as well as the California Board exams in the USA. Rafael then opted to live and work in Surrey, British Columbia under the Fraser Health Authority. Initially, he worked at Langley Memorial Hospital in 1991 and then shortly after started work at Surrey Memorial Hospital as a casual RN. He obtained an abundance of experience working in diverse areas of nursing such as Emergency, Medical/Surgical, Palliative/Hospice, Orthopedic, and Extended/Residential Care. The bulk of his experience was garnered in Psychiatric Nursing. In 2009, Rafael completed his Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, B.C. Not long after, he obtained his Masters in Nursing from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. With both degrees, Rafael earned a high distinction with honours in academic achievement.
Rafael is passionate in advocating for mental health issues and educating people regarding substance use concerns and concurrent disorders. His passion drives his patient-centred care and his desire to pursue higher education. In over 40 years of nursing, he is considering retirement. He hopes to travel and explore the world, hiking with his wife and also spend more time with his many grandchildren. Rafael also hopes to pursue his PhD in Nursing in the very near future.
