Get to know Pediatric Infectious Disease & Wound Care Specialist Dr. Rene Amaya, who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.

Healing wounds and scars in infants and children – it’s what Dr. Amaya is passionate about. As a pediatric infectious disease and wound care specialist, he will treat each child as if they were his own and apply his skill and knowledge to cure every wound big or small.

In Texas, the doctor is a member of Pediatrix Medical Group and is affiliated with multiple hospitals and medical centers, including The Womans Hospital of Texas, HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest,  Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center-Houston, and HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Amaya graduated with his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1995. He then went on to perform his residency in pediatrics at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and his fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, he is board-certified in pediatric infectious disease by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)  and is also one of a handful of pediatric specialists designated by the American Board of Wound Management as a Certified Wound Specialist-Physician. 

Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with the prevention, the diagnosis, and the treatment of all infections. Pediatric infectious disease specialists diagnose, treat, and work to prevent infectious diseases in children. Additionally, they often function like “medical detectives” and evaluate children with symptoms that are recurrent, atypical or unexplained.

Dr. Amaya is a Board Member of the International Society for Pediatric Wound Care. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Amaya is well recognized for his research in complex pediatric wound care and for his numerous scientific conference abstracts and scholarly articles in medical journals. He enjoys teaching and lecturing at wound care conferences and seminars throughout the United States and Europe.
