Renowned Surgeon, Amosy Ephreim M’Koma, MD, MSc, PhD, Leads Goldmining and Groundbreaking Research in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD)

Unveiling the Pathophysiology of IBD and Advancements in Diagnostics and Surgical Management

Nashville, Tennessee – Dr. Amosy Ephreim M’Koma, an oncologist and distinguished Professor of Surgery, Surgical Sciences, Pathology and Cancer Biology at Meharry Medical College, and adjunct Professor of Surgery specialized in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center has been at the forefront of innovative research in the field of IBD. With a career spanning over three decades, Dr. M’Koma’s unwavering commitment to advancing diagnostic methodologies and surgical treatments for colonic conditions such as ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis has garnered international recognition.

Dr. M’Koma’s journey in the medical field began with his Medical Degree from Kharkov Medical Institute in Ukraine, followed by postgraduate studies and a surgical residency program at Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge, Stockholm, in Sweden. Having been Board Certified in General Surgery by The Swedish Board of Health and Welfare, Dr. M’Koma furthered his academic pursuits with a Licentiate of Medical Science Degree and a Ph.D. in Surgery from the prestigious Karolinska Nobel Institute.

Upon relocating to the United States, Dr. M’Koma honed his expertise at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he collaborated with leading experts in Colon and Rectal Surgery. This invaluable experience laid the foundation for his groundbreaking research on predominantly colonic IBD, emphasizing the importance of molecular diagnostic methodologies and surgical interventions in the management.

Dr. M’Koma’s current research focuses on the restorative physiology of intestinal continuity post-surgical procedures for IBD, particularly pouch surgery, the restorative proctocolectomy. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as MALDI-mass spectrometry, proteomics, and recombinant single-chain antibodies, his work aims to identify peptides that offer precise diagnostic tools for IBD as “Gold Standard”. There is a pressing unmet need to develop noninvasive or minimally invasive novel biomarkers with improved performance to address the diagnostic challenges facing IBD patients to provide optimal patient care and develop new drug candidates. No single diagnostic gold standard is available for the distinction of IBD colitis and this uncertainty has not changed over the past 60 years and that IBD incidence is now acknowledged as a global emergent disease affecting a much younger population, a serious concern.

In addition to his academic contributions, Dr. M’Koma is an esteemed member of various professional organizations including the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the American Gastroenterological Association, the Vanderbilt Digestive Disease Research Center, the Vanderbilt Colorectal Research Center, the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons. His dedication to collaborative research is underscored by his involvement with the NIH/NCI Early Detection Research Network and Data Management Center.

Reflecting on his success, Dr. M’Koma attributes his achievements to unwavering focus, relentless dedication, and a collaborative spirit. His commitment to improving patient outcomes and advancing the field of gastrointestinal surgery is evident in his extensive bibliography and long-standing affiliations with esteemed institutions.
