Rex Hamilton, MD, Founder and President, Hamilton Eye Institute

Dr. Hamilton opens his own practice, Hamilton Eye Institute, to provide cutting edge refractive and advanced laser cataract surgical solutions to his patients in Los Angeles.

Dr. Hamilton is among the top-rated ophthalmologists in the United States, offering a customized, personal approach to vision correction surgery. Specializing in laser cataract and refractive eye surgery, he recently opened his own practice, Hamilton Eye Institute, in the West Los Angeles/Beverly Hills area.

After graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from Dartmouth College with an undergraduate degree in Physics and Mathematics, Dr. Hamilton went on to obtain his Master of Science (MS) degree in Biomechanical Engineering from the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia.

After working a couple of years in marketing and product planning for MRI systems at Siemens Medical Systems, he decided to pursue a career in medicine, earning his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine where he graduated at the top of his class. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, followed by his Residency in Ophthalmology at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute, recognized as the top ophthalmology training program in the Western United States. Following this, he spent an additional year completing a fellowship in Cornea, Cataract, Refractive and Glaucoma surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants, under the directorship of Dr. Richard Lindstrom, one of the founding fathers of modern refractive and cataract surgery.

He then returned to the UCLA Stein Eye Institute, where he became a professor and the Medical Director of the UCLA Laser Refractive Center. During his 15 years of service there, he trained over 1000 residents and fellows from the United States and countries throughout the world on advanced cataract and refractive surgery. At the Institute, Dr. Hamilton was the first surgeon to perform laser cataract surgery, implant an accommodative intraocular lens for cataract surgery, utilize intraoperative aberrometry for cataract surgery, and perform Custom Wavefront Guided LASIK.

In March 2017, Dr. Hamilton became the first surgeon on the West Coast to perform the latest generation refractive surgical procedure known as SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction).

Recognized as a pioneer of many surgical techniques, Dr. Hamilton is well known throughout the United States for providing SMILE and LASIK eye surgery. During his many years conducting clinical research, he has also become well-known in the academic community for his expertise in the areas of advanced, presbyopia correcting intraocular lenses for cataract surgery, corneal biomechanics, and corneal tomographic imaging.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (FAAO) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgeons (AECOS), and the California Medical Association.

Moreover, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, which is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

Voted one of 300 Premier Refractive Cataract Surgeons in the US by Ocular Surgery News in 2016, Dr. Hamilton has authored 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, given more than 50 scientific presentations at national meetings, and delivered more than 200 lectures across the country and internationally. He has also served on the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Preferred Practice Pattern Committee for Refractive Surgery. He currently serves on the Refractive/Cataract Clinical Subcommittee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, where he and his colleagues on the Committee have published multiple articles teaching the finer points of new and emerging technologies for cataract and refractive surgery.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform refractive (LASIK), cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
