Get to know Colorectal Surgeon Dr. Richard Fortunato, FACS, FASCRS, who serves patients throughout Western Pennsylvania.
Having been in practice since 2010, Dr. Fortunato is a board-certified colorectal surgeon who offers comprehensive colorectal health care services for benign and cancerous colorectal conditions, inflammatory bowel disease, anorectal conditions, and pelvic floor issues.
Operating out of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital as the Colorectal Surgical Lead Physician, he is also the Associate Program Director for both the AHN General Surgery Residency & AHN Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship. Offering same-day appointments, Dr. Fortunato also treats patients at Allegheny General Hospital, Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion and Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.
As Chair of the Robotic Surgery Curriculum, Dr. Fortunato performs complex minimally invasive robotic, laparoscopic, and transanal surgery — often through a single small incision — to treat colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, rectal prolapse, diverticulitis, and more. In addition, he offers state-of-the-art treatment for fecal incontinence, complex rectovaginal fistulas, pilonidal disease, hemorrhoids, and other proctology related problems.
In regard to his educational background, Dr. Fortunato graduated with his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2003. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and colon and rectal surgery fellowship at the Louisiana State University/ Schumpert Medical Center.
With a strong academic interest, Dr. Fortunato has published many book chapters and journal articles and is an invited speaker for both national and international colon and rectal societies. He holds leadership positions and is a Fellow in the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons – where he was awarded the distinguished Dr. Philip F. Caushaj Excellency in Teaching Award. Dr. Fortunato is also a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Fortunato’s accolades include On-Time Doctor Award (2014, 2018) and Patients’ Choice Award (2018). Prior to joining the Allegheny Health Network, he was named as Northern Virginia Magazine’s Top Doc from (2012 – 2018).
