After completing his Bachelor of Science degree at Boston College in 1970, Dr. Garvey went on to pursue his medical training. In 1974, he graduated with his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, after which he went on to perform his internship and residency in general surgery at Boston Medical Center in 1975 and 1979, respectively.
With years of experience in his field, he is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery, an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. He is also certified by the American Society of Breast Surgeons to perform minimally invasive image guided breast biopsies.
Named a 2020 Top Doctor in the New York Metro Area, Dr. Garvey has conducted several presentations and publications on topics relating to his field, including: “Colocolonic Intussusception in a Three Year Old Caused by a Colonic Polyp”; “Pattern of Burn Cases of Child Abuse at the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Center Over an Eight Year Period”; “The ABC’s of Pediatric Surgery; “Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication, the Bridgeport Hospital Experience”; and “Images of India, Surgical Camp, Khammam, 2005”, among others.
From 2007 until 2020, he served as the Medical Director of the St. Mary Parish Twinning Committee Medical Mission to Marbial, Haiti.
General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland.
