Dr. Miller is the Alfred Newton Richards Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Miller obtained his PhD at the University of Cambridge in his native country (England) and came to the United States in 1975. He spent 25 years at the University of Chicago prior to moving to Northwestern University in 2000.
Most of Dr. Miller’s research has involved the way different drugs and neurotransmitters affect the activity of nerve cells. This has included work on dopamine receptors, opiate receptors and cytokine receptors. Dr. Miller has also worked extensively on understanding the structure and function of calcium channels. The influx of calcium into neurons through these channels is important for many reasons, including the release of neurotransmitters.
Dr. Miller’s laboratory has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1976.
Clinical psychology is a broad branch of psychology that focuses on diagnosing and treating mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Some of the more common disorders that might be treated include learning disabilities, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Clinical psychologists, like Dr. Miller, meet with patients to identify problems – emotional, mental and behavioral – in their lives. Through observation, interviews and tests, they aim to diagnose any existing or potential disorders.
