Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Urso graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, where he was on the Dean’s Distinguished Honor Roll. He went on to study medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He then completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, and concluded with a fellowship in oculoplastics and reconstructive surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
In 1993, Dr. Urso was appointed Ophthalmologist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where he served until April 2005. During this time, he was also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Licensed to practice medicine in Texas, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, nonprofit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States.
On a professional level, Dr. Urso is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the North American Academy of Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery, the Harris County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas Ophthalmic Association. He has also written numerous articles and abstracts relating to a variety of topics in the field of ophthalmology.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract and corneal surgery.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Urso has been the recipient of various awards and honors, including Outstanding Teacher in Ophthalmology from UT-Houston Medical School-Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System Hero Award, Dedication and Service Award from Harris County Fraternal Order of Police #39, and America’s Top Ophthalmologist in Oculoplastics, Reconstructive Surgery, and Refractive Surgery.
Happily married, he and his wife, Stacy, have six beautiful children – Alessandra, Ellie, Catherine, Joey, Anthony, and Isabella. They are heavily involved with the West University Softball Associates and Little League.
