After earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Gupta went on to complete his residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He also completed fellowships in adult reconstructive surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio and in robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement surgery at the Coon Joint Replacement Institute of St. Helena Hospital in St. Helena, California. 

In order to stay up to date in his field, he maintains membership with several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, and the Maryland Orthopaedic Association. Additionally, he is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
