Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. Robert Hardi, who serves patients in Bethesda, Maryland.

A seasoned gastroenterologist, Dr. Hardi has been splitting his time among clinical practice, consulting, and medical research for more than 40 years. His particular clinical interests are inflammatory bowel disease (he served on the National Board of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America) and colorectal cancer screening.

In addition to working with patients at his private practice in Bethesda, Maryland, he serves as a Medical Director of Altimmune, and Chief Clinical Scientist for MediPredict. He is also the Principal at Chevy Chase Gastroenterology, and a gastroenterology consultant for Physician Associates.

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Hardi graduated summa cum laude from the Semmelweis University Medical School in Budapest in 1972. He completed his post graduate training in Biochemistry and Genetics and was an Assistant Professor of Genetics at the Eotvos University of Sciences in Budapest.

Subsequently, he served as a postdoctoral Fellow at Roswell Park Memorial Institute, before starting his clinical training in internal medicine, which he completed in Budapest and at the University Medical School in Hanover, Germany. He completed his clinical fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at the University of New Mexico, and his fellowship in gastroenterology at Cornell University Medical School/The New York Hospital.

Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board-certified in gastroenterology and  by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Maintaining fellowship status, Dr. Hardi is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF), and Fellow of the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research (FAPCR).

In 1996, he founded and was the Medical Director and Principal Investigator of Chevy Chase Clinical Research, which has participated in more than 350 studies in all areas of gastroenterology. He has also served on the Board and as President of the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research, and has held various positions at Capitol Research, Metropolitan Gastroenterology Group, and Capital Digestive Care.

De. Hardi is also Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at The George Washington University Medical School.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. A gastroenterologist is a physician who has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, colon, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.
