Treating patients with respect and courtesy, Dr. Mastey is a dexterous hand surgeon who specializes in hand and upper extremity disorders. The Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in Chattanooga, Tennessee recruited him to join the practice in 1996.
“I know that meeting the needs of a patient with a nagging tennis elbow is equally as important as someone with a significant orthopaedic challenge that requires surgical attention. Turning challenges into opportunities that promote movement for a patient is just the best reward you can have” expressed the doctor.
Beginning his studies at Colgate College, Dr. Mastey received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He continued with graduate studies in the Masters of Applied Human Physiology Program at Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rutgers New Jersey Medical School).
Furthering his education, he completed his postgraduate training in general surgery and orthopaedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center. He then finished his fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at Brown University/ Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.
Having completed two extensive and all-encompassing tests, the doctor is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and surgery of the hand by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.
In addition to being a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Mastey is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the Tennessee Orthopaedic Society, the Southern Orthopaedic Society, the American Medical Association, the Piedmont Orthopaedic Society, the Brown University Hand Surgery Club, the Duke University Hand Surgery Club, and the Carpe Diem Hand Surgery Club.
Hand surgery is surgery of the hand, the wrist, and the peripheral nerves of the upper limb. It also encompasses reconstructive surgery that improves upper limb function. Many disorders and injuries of the hand are treated without surgery, using splints, taping, injections, and hand physiotherapy. Hand surgeons care for these problems with and without surgery. They are specially trained to operate when necessary. Many hand surgeons are also experts in diagnosing and caring for shoulder and elbow problems.
