Robert T. Ownbey, MD, a Pathologist with Sky Ridge Medical Center

Get to know Pathologist Dr. Robert T. Ownbey, who serves patients in Lone Tree, Colorado.

With a reputation for excellence in his field, Dr. Ownbey is a highly regarded pathologist whose expertise is sought after at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colorado.

“In the world of medicine, pathology is about as close as you can get to being a scientist and still contribute to helping patients, albeit indirectly. I spend most of my time looking through a microscope where I am privileged to view a whole other world that most will never get to see. I developed my interest in both science and art at a very early age. I believe that recognizing the sometimes very subtle, microscopic variations in a piece of tissue in order to diagnose disease utilizes my experience in both science and art” expressed Dr. Ownbey.

Born and raised in Queens, New York, he and his family moved to Long Island where he also attended college. Following graduation from Eastern Virginia Medical School, Dr. Owney moved to Massachusetts to begin a residency program in family medicine. However, he found that he missed exploring the science of medicine, so, after one year, he began a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. It was after this that he began his combined anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, followed by a fellowship in surgical pathology.

An authority in his field, the doctor is board certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath). The mission of the ABPath is to promote the health of the public and advance the practice and science of pathology by establishing voluntary certification standards and assessing the qualifications of those seeking to practice the specialty of pathology.

In his professional journey, Dr. Ownbey initiated his career in Philadelphia at Drexel University College of Medicine, dedicating 16 years to the practice of pathology and the instruction of medical students and pathology residents. During a significant portion of this period, he assumed the role of Director of Autopsy Services. In 2018, he made a transition to Colorado, initially joining Rose Medical Center and later transferring to Sky Ridge Medical Center in 2022.

Continually advancing his contributions to the field, Dr. Ownbey remains an engaged member of prominent organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the College of American Pathologists.

Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and in some cases, the whole body in the case of autopsies. Pathologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and management of diseases by laboratory methods. A Forensic Pathologist uses many of these skills, as well as others, to determine whether a death is accidental, criminal or natural.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Ownbey enjoys art such as sketching, painting (both in oil and watercolor), crafting jewelry, engaging in lapidary work, scale modeling, woodworking, playing golf, and fishing.
