Robert W. Chow, MD, a Neurologist with Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute

Get to know Neurologist Dr. Robert W. Chow, who serves patients in Los Angeles, California.

A seasoned neurologist, Dr. Chow is affiliated with the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute at the University of South California (USC), and is retired from the faculty at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

The Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute (ZNI) is a cross-disciplinary hub for the neuroscience community at USC. Their clinicians and physician-scientists, along with researchers and trainees at all levels, are dedicated to understanding the complexities of brain diseases and disorders, developing innovative therapies and ultimately discovering and translating cures from bench to bedside.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Chow graduated with his medical degree and completed his residency in neurology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

A keen researcher, the doctor has published over 80 papers in various medical journals. Currently, the aim of his laboratory is to advance the understanding of how hormone and neuronal secretion is controlled in normal and pathological states, and then to translate this knowledge to improve human health.

Another related area of interest of his laboratory is the cellular mechanism of abnormal secretion and cell death in diabetes mellitus. In collaboration with Prof. Ralf Langen (Biochemistry, ZNI), Dr. Chow is studying the mechanism of cell death in pancreatic beta cells. Their goal is to understand the nature of derangements in beta cell function early in disease, which may permit design of therapeutic interventions early in the development of type I and II diabetes.

Finally, in collaboration with Mark Humayun (Ophthalmology, BME) and Jim Weiland (Ophthalmology, BME), he is studying methods to restore sight to the blind. They perform imaging of retinal ganglion and bipolar neurons expressing genetically encoded calcium indicators, in order to better understand how to improve signaling between the microelectrode array of an implanted epiretinal prosthesis and the retina. In addition, they are working on photoactivated molecules that embed in cell membranes, converting the cells into light-sensors — a novel cellular prosthesis.

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.
