Dr. Chiappini, a specialist in restoring movement and function to people disabled by disease or injury, has joined Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) as Regional Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). He oversees the PM&R departments at HealthAlliance Hospitals in Kingston and MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, all members of WMCHealth.

In his role, Dr. Chiappini oversees the creation of therapy plans to restore the health and functional abilities of people after illness or injury such as a stroke, spinal cord injury, spinal disorder, heart surgery, amputation, joint replacement, sports injury, multiple trauma or other conditions. He also leads an interdisciplinary team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other rehabilitation professionals to help patients get back on their feet.

A former medical director of inpatient rehabilitation at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and medical director of Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center in Greenfield, New Hampshire, his special clinical interests include stroke rehabilitation, brain injury rehabilitation, geriatric rehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation, as well as complementary and alternative medicine.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 1992. He then went on to perform his internship at Westchester Medical Center / New York Medical College, and his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. 

A member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Chiappini is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation & brain-injury medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR). The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This is accomplished through a process of certification and maintenance of certification that fosters excellence and encourages continuous learning.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry and physiatrics, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Physiatrists treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

Named a Top Doctor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by New Hampshire Magazine, Dr. Chiappini is also the recipient of the Arthur Siebens Award, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program, Johns Hopkins-Sinai Hospital.
