Dr. Belalcazar is a board-certified ophthalmologist who sees patients at his private practice, Advanced Eye Center, in Hialeah, Florida. The practice was opened in 2012 with the goal to offer the people of South Florida, the United States, and the world the most innovative treatments to improve their vision. It is one of the first centers in South Florida to offer collagen crosslinking for keratoconus, corneal warpage, and ectasia.
In his current capacity, Dr. Belalcazar also performs phacoemulsification cataract surgery at the Larkin Community Hospital in Miami, the North Miami Surgical Center, and the Palm Springs Hospital.
Prior to his current endeavours, he performed thousands of radial keratotomy surgeries and cataract and corneal transplants at the Surgical Ocular Institute Palermo. He was also the Director of the Eye Clinic at the University Foundation of San Martin in Colombia, as well as the Medical Director of Vision Specialty Care for South Florida. Throughout the years, he has performed over 5,000 LASIK, LASEK and EPI-LASEK procedures, as well as more than 3,000 glaucoma and other ophthalmology laser surgeries.
A native of Colombia, Dr. Belalcazar received his medical degree there and completed his residency at the Colombian Institute of Ocular Surgery in Bogotá. He then underwent refractive surgery training at the world famous Instituto Barraquer de America in 1993, The Myopia Ocular Center in Madrid in 1996, as well as at Park Avenue Laser Vision in New York with Emil W. Chynn, MD in 2008.
Certified by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates of Medical Examiners, he is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.
Additionally, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, which is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. Among his various achievements, Dr. Belalcazar has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the Colombian Culture & Heritage Award for his professional achievement and service to the national community, as well as multiple recognitions for Outstanding and Professional Excellence from the State Senate, Council and Assembly of New York. He is part of several leading researchers in glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, refractive surgery, and keratoconus in the country.
Outside of the office, Dr. Belalcazar enjoys mountain and rock climbing, running marathons and triathlons, scuba diving, and skydiving. He is a naturalized US citizen.
