Recently retired from Abbott Northwestern Hospital/Allina Health, we are proud to announce the continued contributions of Ronald Tarrel, DO, a highly respected neurologist specializing in vascular and general neurology with fellowship training specifically in stroke and neurocritical care. Over his 32-year career, Dr Tarrel has played an integral role in education, neurologic research, and patient care. Dr Tarrel Dr. Tarrel exemplifies this mission through his dedication to improving patient outcomes.

With a robust educational background, Dr. Tarrel earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from Midwestern University (Formerly known as Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine) in 1987. He completed his internship at Rush University Medical Center from 1987 to 1988 and further honed his expertise during his neurology residency at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine from 1988 to 1991. Dr. Tarrel completed a prestigious fellowship in neurocritical care at Hennepin County Medical Center/University of Minnesota from 1991-1992, equipping him with advanced skills to manage complex neurological conditions.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tarrel has held several key leadership roles, including Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of Minnesota, Director of the Stroke Services Program at Abbott Northwestern part of Allina Health, Interim director of Neurocritical care and 2 terms as head of the Abbott Northwestern Neuroscience Committee. His experience enables him to employ state-of-the-art techniques and personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs. As a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, he remains committed to continuous learning, teaching medical students and residents, and staying updated with the latest advancements in neurological research and therapies. Dr Tarrel has been awarded the Minnesota Monthly magazine annual “Top Doctor” on multiple occasions in his specialty. 

Dr. Tarrel is not only focused on patient care; he is also deeply involved in neurological/ stroke research. He has been a primary investigator in several studies and participated in multiple studies as a sub-investigator as well.  His research has included numerous national and international studies, sharing his insights and findings with the medical community, and he has given many lectures involving the progress of neurologic management of disease.  pave the way for innovative treatments and improved care for patients facing neurological challenges.

Dr Tarrel remains interested in advancing neurologic care and research and has experience working with the military, the USA TaeKwonDo Association, the Professional Rodeo Association, and also local Junior High and High Schools in the diagnosis and management of concussion in sports
