Rosalia Viterbo, MD, FACS, FCPP, a Urologic Oncologist with Fox Chase Cancer Center

Get to know Urologic Oncologist Dr. Rosalia Viterbo, who serves patients in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Viterbo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology and the only female member of Fox Chase Cancer Center’s team of urologic oncologists.

Providing patients with the best medical and surgical care, she operates out of the Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She also offers her services at Fox Chase Cancer Center – Huntingdon Pike in Rockledge.

Her specialities include adrenal tumor, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, penile cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, ureteral cancer, and urethral cancer. Her treatment focus is on robotic surgery and adrenal carcinoma.

Coming from a large family, Dr. Viterbo believes in an approach to cancer care that involves the individual and the family. Personally, she treats her patients the way she would want her family treated – with honesty, compassion, and skill.

“Having had experience with more than 1,500 robotic prostatectomies, partial nephrectomy, cystectomy and neobladder, indiana pouch and ileal conduit diversions, I have treated patients with various urologic malignancies. I did this through the use of robotics and minimally invasive surgery, as well as open surgery, when appropriate. At Fox Chase, my goal is to continue offering excellent care and leading edge technology, ultimately to benefit the individual outcome and overall quality of life of my patients” says Dr. Viterbo.

Her acclaimed career in medicine began after she earned her Medical Degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 2000. She then went on to perform her residency in general surgery and urology at Temple University Hospital, followed by her fellowship in robotic urologic oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center.

Board certified in urology, Dr. Viterbo is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology (ABU). The mission of the ABU is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, and working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.

“With today’s advancing technology, it is critical for me, as a surgeon, to keep current with the expanding base of knowledge and make contributions that translate into reducing the burden of cancer. This starts with the individual and then applies to populations. This knowledge will be invaluable throughout my career as I care for my patients, make decisions, assume leadership responsibilities and respond to complex situations” states Dr. Viterbo.

Her research interests include prostate cancer; robotic and minimally invasive surgery, including prostatectomy, nephrectomy and cystectomy with neobladder and indiana pouch diversion; robotic salvage prostatectomy; and prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancer.

Distinguished with fellowship status, Dr. Viterbo is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia (FCPP).

Moreover, she is an active member of the Society of Urologic Oncology, the American Urological Association, and the Philadelphia Urological Society.

Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. A urologic oncologist is a physician with special training in diagnosing and treating cancers of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. These organs include the bladder, kidneys, prostate, penis and testicles.

The vision and drive Viterbo applies to her professional life is also present in her personal life. While working to pioneer the field of robotic surgery and improve her patients’ outcomes, she is also married and a mother of three.

“As much as I work on my career—being a great surgeon, learning new technology, and making sure I am up to date on advances that will help my patients—I also devote myself to being the best mom I can be” expresses Dr. Viterbo.
