Growing up in Clifton, New Jersey, Dr. Ahkami knew that she wanted to be a doctor like her father, an obstetrician-gynecologist. Her acclaimed career in medicine began in 1994 after she earned her medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark. She completed her internship at the New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center.
Before starting her residency, she spent one year as a dermatology fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. During her training, she was involved in dermatology research and published many papers in dermatology journals. She then completed her residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, where she met her husband.
Deeply committed to her work, Dr. Ahkami is board-certified in dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology, which is a voluntary, non-profit, private, autonomous organization formed for the primary purpose of protecting the public interest by establishing and maintaining high standards of training, education, and qualifications of physicians rendering care in dermatology. She also enjoys teaching the dermatology residents at the East Orange VA Medical Center, which is an affiliated teaching hospital of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
