Get to know Surgical Oncologist Dr. Russell C. Langan, who serves patients throughout the State of New Jersey.

Dr. Langan is a reputable surgical oncologist whose practice primarily focuses on the management of tumors of the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, pancreas, and intestinal tract. He provides hope to his patients where many might find it lost, as well as strives to provide the highest level of expertise and precision with unwavering compassion and optimism.

The doctor joined the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey in a dual appointment with RWJBarnabas Health. He sees patients at both Saint Barnabas Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility in Livingston, and the Rutgers Cancer Institute in New Brunswick. As such, he is the Chief of Surgical Oncology and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery and the Chairman of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.  

“As a member of the Gastrointestinal/Hepatobiliary Oncology Program at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, I work in close collaboration with members of the multidisciplinary disease management teams including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, genetic counselors, and dietitians to ensure my patients receive the highest level of evidence-based care including clinical trials.” as stated by Dr. Langan.

Prior to joining Rutgers Cancer Institute, he completed his residency in general surgery at Georgetown University Hospital, followed by fellowships in tumor immunotherapy and surgical oncology within the Surgery Branch under Dr. Steven Rosenberg at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health as well as a fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he received specialized training in the surgical management of hepatobiliary, pancreas, and intestinal cancers. 

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Langan serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery within the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He enjoys his role as a mentor to young medical students and residents who share the same dream that he had, so they too can positively influence the lives of others.

Passionate about advancing the field of surgical oncology, he strives to improve patient clinical outcomes and survival rates through the use of novel perioperative multidisciplinary treatment strategies. He is board-certified in general surgery and complex general surgical oncology by the American Board of Surgery, which is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. 

To advance his professional efforts, the doctor remains a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Hepatopancreatobiliary Association, SSO Advanced Cancer Therapies, and the Association for Academic Surgery.  

As a testament to his success, Dr. Langan has received awards from the American Cancer Society, the National Institutes of Health, Health and Human Services, Georgetown University Hospital, the District of Columbia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, the Marquis Who’s Who Award (2015), and the Top Doctor Award for Surgical Oncology in New York, New York (2016), among others.

Additionally, he has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and 8 book chapters dedicated to surgical oncology. Within this field, he has lectured and presented nationally, as well as has served as an associate investigator on numerous clinical trials.
