Ruth S. Spector, MD, an Intensivist in Private Practice

Get to know Intensivist Dr. Ruth S. Spector, who serves patients in New York.

Dr. Spector is a triple board-certified intensivist experienced in all aspects of critical care and related procedures. She is self-employed, maintaining a private practice in New York as a physician as well as a healthcare consultant for facilities or healthcare systems.

Prior to her current endeavours, she worked at Good Samaritan hospital, where she was the Medical Director of MICU and the Director of Critical Care Services. She led her critical care team through a tough transition to a closed unit overcoming staffing shortages as well as administrative pressure. With her help, the hospitalist program and critical care team were seamlessly integrated through clear division of responsibilities and hand off policies that were fair and transparent.

Throughout her academic career, Dr. Spector graduated with her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1986. She then went on to perform her residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, her fellowship in critical care medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center, and her residency in anesthesiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell Campus. She also earned her Master of Business Administration degree in Health/Health Care Administration/Management from Adelphi University in 2017.

With over 35 years of experience, she is board-certified in internal medicine and critical care medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Furthermore, she is board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. 

With a demonstrated history of working in the health wellness and fitness industry, Dr. Spector has been serving as an Executive Board Member of the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation since 2009.

Intensive care medicine, also called critical care medicine, is a medical specialty that deals with seriously or critically ill patients who have, are at risk of, or are recovering from conditions that may be life-threatening. An intensivist is a physician who specializes in the care of critically ill patients, most often in the intensive care unit.
