Emergency Medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with the care of illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention. As first-line providers, emergency physicians manage patients of all ages with undifferentiated ailments of all types. They are primarily responsible for initiating resuscitation and stabilization and beginning investigations and interventions to diagnose and treat illnesses in the acute phase. Emergency physicians generally practice in hospital emergency departments, but may also work in primary care settings such as urgent care clinics. Emergency physicians may subspecialize in disaster medicine, medical toxicology, ultrasonography, critical care medicine, hyperbaric medicine, sports medicine, palliative care, or aerospace medicine.

Occupational and environmental medicine is perhaps the most wide-ranging of all medical specialties. It is the medical specialty devoted to the prevention and management of occupational and environmental injury, illness and disability, and promotion of health and productivity of workers, their families, and communities. Today, the complexity and pervasiveness of modern industrial processes afford occupational and environmental medicine physicians the opportunity to address work-site and environmental concerns and such community health and policy issues as atmospheric pollution, product safety, health promotion and benefits value management.

When not working, Dr. Searle enjoys swimming, and is ranked 5th nationally for his age group.
