Salwa Gendi, MD, a Pediatric Cardiologist with West Virginia University Health Sciences Center

Get to know Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Salwa Gendi, who serves patients in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Dr. Gendi is a board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric cardiologist with WVU Health. She serves as the Adults with Congenital Heart Disease Program Director, caring for patients with congenital heart disease from fetal life to adulthood.

As for her academic appointment, she serves as an Assistant Professor within the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Cardiology at West Virginia University School of Medicine.

Born and raised in Egypt, from a family who was in the medical field, Dr. Gendi grew up with an understanding of promoting health and a desire to help alleviate suffering caused by disease. Medicine for her was a calling and studies were a long meditation and prayer. She learned that creation is precious, especially the human beings whom she sees as a big family all over the world.

Throughout her career, she has always placed a high priority on continuing medical education and research. She was teaching echo courses to young cardiologists and technicians. In medical school at Cairo University School of Medicine in Egypt, Dr. Gendi finished her training in adult cardiology and conducted two projects on rheumatic heart disease and hypertension.

During and after her training in Egypt, she had the opportunity to travel and work in different cultural environments, including France, the United States, and the Arab Gulf, State of Qatar where she helped settle their congenital Echolab for pediatric cardiology and ACHD. She also volunteered as a general practitioner in a health center in Lebanon, when the need arose by the end of the war there. Through these experiences, Dr. Gendi learned a great deal about the impact of culture on the health of the individual and communities. 

When she immigrated to the United States, she did additional training in med/peds and pediatric cardiology, as well as obtained a Master’s degree in Clinical Research from Rush University in Chicago, Illinois.

With over four decades of experience, the doctor is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics. She is also board-certified in internal medicine and adult congenital heart disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

While Dr. Gendi was appointed with the University of Mississippi, she helped build the outreach congenital cardiology clinic in Tupelo. Then, she moved to the University of West Virginia as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Cardiology. 

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. A pediatric cardiologist provides comprehensive care to patients with cardiovascular problems. This specialist is skilled in selecting, performing, and evaluating the structural and functional assessment of the heart and blood vessels, and the clinical evaluation of cardiovascular disease.

Fluent in English, French and Arabic, being multilingual has been a great advantage for Dr. Gendi.
