Sandor Szabo, MD, PhD, MPH, DSc (h.c.), Pathologist

Get to know Pathologist Dr. Sandor Szabo, who serves patients throughout the State of California.

A highly trained pathologist, Dr. Szabo has been serving as a Professor of Pathology & Pharmacology at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine since October of 1994.

His laboratory is concerned with the field of the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal (GI) ulceration, especially of duodenal ulcer. Most of the seminal contributions which evolved from his laboratory relate to the experimental models that he developed and mechanisms related to duodenal ulcers.

For the past decade, Dr. Szabo systematically investigated the underlying mechanisms involved in experimental ulcers using an array of morphological, functional, biochemical, molecular biologic and pharmacologic methods of approach. He applied his knowledge of angiogenesis, growth factors and gene expression to the field of experimental ulcers. This provided new venues to explain the mechanisms of GI ulceration and the action of drugs such as sucralfate and potential new therapeutic strategies for healing ulcers.

Growing up as a Hungarian minority in former Yugoslavia, Dr. Szabo obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Medicine. He went on to earn his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees under the mentorship of Prof. Hans Selye, in his Inst. of Experimental Medicine & Surgery at the University of Montreal.

Furthering his training, he performed a residency in pathology and a postdoctoral fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He was then appointed as Assistant Professor, followed by Associate Professorship in Pathology at Harvard Medical School.

Thereafter, Dr. Szabo became Director of the Chemical Pathology Research Division of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, obtained a Master of Public Health Degree at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, was invited to lead the Pathology & Lab. Med Service of Long Beach VA Medical Center, as well as served as Chief of Staff at LBVAMC and Associate Deanship at UCI-SOM.

Among his most current roles, Dr. Szabo is President of Health Education & Research Collaborative (HERC), Inc. and serves as the President of ChemoPathology ResourCenter (CPRC), Inc.

His research accomplishments have resulted in 10 USA & international patents; 232 original publications (2 in Nature, 3 in Science, 4 in Lancet, 1 in JAMA, JCI & PNAS, each), 54 review articles, 37 book chapters, 5 books edited, and 231 invited lectures in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
