Sarah M. Miller, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, CNRN, an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner & Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse

Get to know Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner & Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse, Sarah M. Miller, who serves patients in Boca Raton, Florida.

Sarah is an advanced practice registered nurse, a board-certified family nurse practitioner, and a certified neuroscience registered nurse. She works as a Specialty Stroke Clinician at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Florida.

There, she is responsible for delivering quality, timely, and effective care to stroke and neuroscience patients. She assesses and coordinates acute neurological patients, as well as participates in data analysis, performance improvement, quality measures, and the education/development of other healthcare providers. She also ensures stroke program accreditation requirements are satisfactory and best practice guidelines are maintained.

The Marcus Neuroscience Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital is an innovative nexus for neurologic and neurosurgical care. The 57,000-square-foot facility houses a 20-bed Neuro Intensive Care and Step-Down Unit, four dedicated operating rooms — including one equipped with intraoperative MRI and two with intraoperative CT capability — and a biplane angiography suite, a crucial component in the diagnosis and care of neurological conditions.

As a teenager, Sarah became interested in nursing when she witnessed her grandmother suffer with multiple comorbidities. She recalled the feeling of complete helplessness because she didn’t have the knowledge or skill to help her. Thereafter, she developed a strong desire to learn how to aid others and sought after the opportunity to positively impact people’s lives by becoming a healthcare provider.

After graduating from Archbishop McCarthy High School, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Nova Southeastern University in 2007. She started her nursing career in a large level 1 trauma hospital on a telemetry/transplant floor that same year until she transitioned to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in 2008. In the ICU, she cared for trauma, medical, surgical, neurological, and transplant patients. She then transferred to the Emergency Department in 2013. A year later, she switched organizations and began working at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and contributed to the inaugural development of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute. Here, she served as a Clinical Nurse Manager of Neuroscience ICU and Progressive Care units until 2018 when she transitioned to the role of Specialty Stroke Clinician.

In 2019, Sarah graduated with her Master of Science in Nursing degree in Family Practice from Herzing University. Interested in all research that impacts the quality of care delivery, she is an active participant in stroke research. Currently, she is involved in these IRB approved studies: MENDS vs NIHSS, ARCADIA, & TESLA.

When asked how she makes a difference in the lives of her patients, Sarah answered that their lives are impacted by the quality of care they receive. “Educating and empowering nurses to be competent and compassionate caregivers is what makes the most significant impact on patient care.”

Her passion for nursing and innate compassion for others motivates her each day. She attributes her success to the support of her family and the collaboration of her fellow nurses that motivated her to set a positive example of what a nurse should be.

An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is a nurse who has obtained at least a master’s degree in nursing. APRNs may work across various healthcare settings, including hospitals, ambulatory clinics or long-term care facilities. They provide medical support and preventative care to patients, along with additional responsibilities of coordinating patient care and using specialized knowledge to manage complex patient conditions. APRNs can diagnose and treat as well as order and interpret tests and prescribe medications.

A Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC) is an advanced practice registered nurse who holds board certification and works autonomously or in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, to deliver family-focused care. Given the rather broad nature of the “family” patient population focus, FNPs offer a wide range of healthcare services that revolve around the family unit; from health promotion and disease prevention to direct care and counseling across the lifespan.

A Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (CNRN) treats patients with neurological injuries and disorders, including head and spinal trauma from accidents, or illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. Certification is the only credential that represents an all-encompassing knowledge of and experience with fundamental neuroscience nursing concepts.

Among her philanthropic endeavors, Sarah is a contributor of the American Heart Association, as well as a supporter of Louis and Anne Green Memory Annual Walk for Alzheimer’s & Lynn Cancer Institute Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. She is also the Co-Author of Trauma Certified Registered Nurse Examination Review (Springer Publishing, 2017).

Due to her outstanding work in the field, she has been the recipient of several awards and honors, including Nursing Excellence Award from Nova Southeastern University (2007), Nursing Excellence Award from Broward Health (2008, 2010, 2012), and Nursing Caring Award at Boca Raton Regional Hospital (2015).

On a more personal note, Sarah is married.
