Scott Macleod, MD, a Family Physician with Highlander Family Medicine

Get to know Family Physician Dr. Scott Macleod, who serves patients in Woodstock, Virginia.

Dr. Macleod, at his core, is a family physician. He is in practice with Highlander Family Medicine in Woodstock, Virginia. His areas of expertise include chronic disease management,

diabetes mellitus type 2, and mental health concerns.

“Our practice strongly believes we look after patients, who all become part of our family here. Individual care that is specifically designed for each person and not just protocol medicine applied to all. We are committed to helping people with all that life throws at them. Family medicine for us is a long-term relationship with real people. We strive to walk with you through our journey in life. Medicine is always changing but the relationship is the key to better health, not just for when you are sick but also to optimize your health. Being independent makes us more loyal to our patients rather than a boss. We are passionate that every person should have their family physician, working together to get the best care that medicine has to offer” expressed the doctor.

Graduating with his undergraduate degree in Pre-Med from the University of Toronto in 1973, Dr. Macleod went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in 1977. He followed this up with a residency in family medicine at Toronto Western Hospital – University of Toronto in 1979.

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in family medicine through the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.

Since 2008, Dr. Macleod has served as a Preceptor and Lecturer of the Physician Assistant Program at James Madison University. He is also affiliated with a number of hospitals and medical centers, including Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, University of Virginia Medical Center, and Winchester Medical Center.

For half of his career, he practiced medicine in Ontario, Canada before eventually residing and building his practice in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, which he now calls home.

The majority of his time spent in Virginia has been dedicated to small town medicine in a solo, independent practice. He has partaken in almost every aspect of medicine that a family physician can experience within his career. This includes, but is not limited to: hospital work (labor and delivery, emergency room, inpatient care, etc.), coroner, community activation activities, statewide health promotion projects, political medical functions and administrative functions (such as Chief of Staff). Ultimately, all of these experiences have helped him become a better, more well-rounded and experienced family doctor.

Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility.

On a more personal note, Dr. Macleod is, without a doubt, a geek at heart. He thoroughly enjoys anything within the realm of science fiction and he is passionate about all things Star Trek. He also has a deep love and appreciation for aviation. In his spare time, with what little spare time he may have, he enjoys attending various “comic-cons” and airshows where he can likely be seen taking an obscene number of photos.

He is also very proud of his Scottish family heritage. Because of this, Celtic activities and traditions are also important to him. He even got married in a kilt! However, at the core of everything that makes Dr. Macleod who he is an individual and as a provider is his family. Family is very important to him, which is why it is not uncommon to catch a glimpse of one of his grandchildren as you check in for your appointment. Pictures of his family and his staff, in addition to all that he holds dear, are readily evident on the walls of Highlander Family Medicine.
