Shahana Perveen, MD, a Neonatologist with North Shore University Hospital

Get to know Neonatologist Dr. Shahana Perveen, who serves patients in Manhasset, New York.

Dr. Perveen is a fellowship-trained neonatologist caring for the critically ill newborn and premature infants. She holds various positions, including Assistant Investigator at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, Associate Chief of Neonatal Services at North Shore University Hospital, and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

In collaboration with Northwell Health, she is affiliated with Huntington Hospital, Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, South Shore University Hospital, and Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. 

Academically, Dr. Perveen received her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Dow Medical College, Karachi University in Pakistan in 1991. After that, she came to the United States and joined the New York Medical College/ Metropolitan Hospital and did her residency in pediatrics. She then received her subspecialty training in neonatal/perinatal medicine at North Shore University Hospital.

In 2001, she started her career as a neonatologist in the Metropolitan Hospital/Westchester Medical Center. As an active pediatric faculty member, Dr. Perveen was involved with residents and medical students, teaching and receiving several Best Teacher awards from the department. She was also appointed as the associate residency program director and was involved in curriculum development and implementation. During this time period, she participated in a few multicenter clinical studies and mentored the residents for their clinical project/research studies.

 

In 2010, Dr. Perveen joined the Cohen Children’s Medical Center/Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. She joined the research group of neonatal perinatal lab at the Feinstein Institutes and started working as an investigator in the lab along with her full-time commitment as a neonatologist in the neonatal intensive care unit at Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center. 

With years of experience, she is actively involved in basic science research as well as with several QI projects with neonatal fellows and is a chair on the BPD QI Committee. She is also a PI and Co-PI in several ongoing clinical multicenter studies in the neonatal intensive care unit.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the doctor is board-certified in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The ABP exists to promote excellence in medical care for children and adolescents. Certification represents dedication by pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, and pediatric trainees to the highest level of professionalism in patient care.

An authority in her field, Dr. Perveen’s research focus is to develop a new therapeutic modality to be used during the antenatal period to help lung growth in the critical stage of growth and development before birth in patients with CDH. She is continuing her efforts to improve lung growth prenatally in the CDH rat model by working on the role of the Arginase inhibitor in the antenatal period to promote angiogenesis and lung growth with congenital diaphragmatic hernia rat model. Recently, she is also developing an animal model to study the effect of environmental toxins in development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill, or premature newborn. It is a hospital-based specialty and is practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinating care and medically managing newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery. 

On a more personal note, Dr. Perveen speaks several languages, including English, Hindi, and Urdu.
