A double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Haykal is the Section Chief of Reconstructive Oncology within the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Yale Medicine. She specializes in microsurgical techniques for restoring breast sensation and immediate lymphatic reconstruction, minimizing the risk of lymphedema—a chronic condition often faced by breast cancer survivors. Her comprehensive approach includes lymphovenous bypass and lymph node transplantation, showcasing her expertise in treating lymphedema and enhancing the quality of life for her patients.

With years of experience in autologous-based reconstruction techniques such as DIEP, PAP, SGAP, TUG, and LD flap procedures, she is dedicated to providing her patients with the highest quality of care and the most effective reconstructive options. Her distinguished career is marked by her commitment to advancing patient care and her research in breast reconstructive surgery and vascularized composite allotransplantation.

Graduating as class valedictorian and silver medalist from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine in 2007, Dr. Haykal completed her residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Toronto in 2016 and pursued a fellowship in microsurgical reconstruction at Albany Medical Center in New York. Her impressive academic background is complemented by a PhD in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, emphasizing tracheal reconstruction.

In addition to her focus on breast reconstruction, she is well-versed in the microsurgical treatment of skin cancers, head and neck cancers, and sarcomas. She emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships with her patients, encouraging open discussions about their treatment preferences and expectations. “It is crucial to establish trust and understanding throughout the treatment process,” she explained. “I strive to create a collaborative environment where patients feel heard and supported.”

Among her numerous accolades, Dr. Haykal was named one of “Canada’s Top 40 under 40” in 2021 and received several prestigious awards, including the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery’s Women in Microsurgery Travel Scholarship. With over 50 peer-reviewed publications to her name, her research contributions significantly advance the field of reconstructive surgery, including innovative studies on the use of recipient-derived stem cells for airway repair.
